Early 20th C. Edo Painted Wood Mask - "Rabbit Ears"
Item Details
Description
Africa, Nigeria, Edo (Bini) peoples, early 20th century CE. This is a hand carved wood mask from the Edo peoples of Nigeria, the descendants of the founders of the Benin Empire, who live in south and mid-western Nigeria. The mask is brilliantly colored with red and dark greenish blue paint; with a relatively realistic human face carved below what can only be described as "rabbit ears" protruding from the head. A mask this side would have been work atop the head -- note the holes drilled around the side for placing raffia or woven material to hold it on. Size: 7" W x 12.75" H (17.8 cm x 32.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Poolos collection / Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
