Pair Chinese Bencharong Ginger Jars with Gilt Bronze Fittings, 19th C.
Item Details
Description
Pair Chinese Bencharong Ginger Jars with Gilt Bronze Fittings, 19th Century. This rare and exceptional pair of lidded ginger jars are of special type called Bencharong (5 color). Originally made in Zhejiang only for the Royal Siamese family. After the Siamese King brought Chinese porcelain craftsmen to Siam he allowed the rest of the aristocracy and a few influential people to own some of the production. Most pieces made were small offering dishes and jarlets. Very few pairs of larger vessels were ever produced. Bencharong was quite difficult and time consuming to make. Enameled colors are applied and then overglazed. This created a relief effect throughout. The artifact must be fired after each color is applied. This ware was considered the highest quality of porcelain available to Siam. Dating is still somewhat subjective and much of this specific pattern is attributed to the 17th/18th century. We believe that there may have been some pairs produced then, but that almost all are 19th century. Note: Small single antique covered vessels of this design are usually c. 2000 per single. Large pairs in the past 9 years have sold in the $6,000 - $26,000 range. All were smaller than this pair and some had damage and were lesser quality even though the same pattern.
