Chinese Ming Pottery Chicken Votive Tomb Offering
Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A wonderful mold-made pottery chicken votive funerary offering. The chicken rests on an integral bowl-shaped pedestal, and rests its head on its back, as if resting - although it is more likely that it has been cooked and is ready for eating. This is a mingqi - sometimes known as "spirit utensils" or "vessels for ghosts." Pottery representations of food, animals, and people became popular in the Han Dynasty and were placed inside tombs to feed and assist the deceased in the afterlife. A wonderful example! Size: 2.75" W x 2.5" H (7 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired 1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
